Markus Mayer

Dr. Markus Mayer is Programme Manager for South- & Southeast Asia at International Alert in London, covering work in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Since 1995, he has worked on issues related to poverty and economic dimensions of conflict, with a focus on youth employment in (post-) conflict situations, conflict sensitive development programming, and business for peace interventions. He has a Ph.D in Development Geography from the University of Heidelberg on youth conflict and development planning, and is co-editor of Building Local Capacities for Peace: Rethinking Conflict and Development in Sri Lanka (Macmillan 2003) and The Challenge of Youth Unemployment in Sri Lanka (World Bank-ILO 2010). Prior to his employment with Alert he was attached as a lecturer and researcher to the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg (Germany) and worked with GIZ in Sri Lanka to coordinate a capacity development program to improve employability of social science graduates.
